I said it is subjective, but I couldn't advise anyone to make the change without having tried it first.
On smooth roads it's fine, but while they are not noticed, every bang and thump from potholes is noticed.
Like I say, travel on the roads you normally use, if it seems OK to you then take the offer. Are you keeping or selling your 16"ers?
I have just spoken to a local UK dealer parts manager. I thought shock absorbers were the same for all New Shape models, 95 to date, and he confirmed this. There are no different shock absorbers listed for 99 or 00 models, and I would have thought that is what would have changed, if anything, to compensate for the low sidewall tyres.
When I was looking for my 16" wheels I spoke to several owner drivers in the UK and they all reported a harsher ride with 18" wheels.
Perhaps it is a UK thing, although I do recall someone on the Rovers North and LROI sites who was really upset at the ride. He was comparing 18" new with Classic old.
This was in March 2000, so the archives are no longer available. He was in NYC.

Even if you do change, I hope you enjoy it, it's your car. :-)
