Found the fault which was obviously a bad earth. Going back to my original post, the fault was that when the gearbox was removed 3 weeks ago the earth cable for rear lights, fuel pump and fuel guage was taken off the bolt for the right rear mount for the transfer box and neatly pushed on top of the chassis rail! It was obviously not put back by the mechanic. I do not understand why the vehicle ran for 3 weeks with only the fuel gauge under-reading fault - maybe the cable was just making contact on the chassis and one bump too many moved it. Seems that the NAS 90 cabling is unique to (90) Defenders(?) with rear tank and submerged pump and rear lights in a different position and bigger. There is no common earth on rear cross member for the lights, all cables from the back disappear into the RHS chassis and re-appear just forward of the passenger seat area. Here the harness splits into 2, one part goes up into the engine compartment by the heater the other part then again splits with one part the (quite heavy gauge) earth lead. If your lights / fuel pump gauge on a 1995 NAS 90 start to give problems try this earth lead first. |
