If you simply want some higher ratios, I think the cheapest option would be fitting an overdrive, but this will add an extra lever to move with all the others, besides it can only be used in third and fourth gear, otherwise you might damage the unit. I know some one that has installed a 5spd gearbox from a 90 on a series II SWB. He kept the same axles both front and rear but had to modify the gearbox tunnel so as the unit could fit. He had also to modify both prop shafts as these where either short or long. But if I was in your position i.e. like series LRs, fitted a modern engine, would like to fit a 5 spd gearbox, I would complete the job by replacing axles and fitting coil springs. This way you'll have more power, less revs, better ride, but at the same will keep the look of a series LR. I hope this info is usefull for you Regards Etienne
