The system is 12V -ground. I have a '96 and the radio is a tuner with stock outboard amps, not sure where the amps are located though. No one I have been able to find in the US makes a wiring harness for the system, and it wouldn't matter any way because of the amps. Some stereo shops in Dallas and New Orleans told me that they won't touch a Discovery unless they can rip out the system and start over.
Even at that, the only aftermarket speakers I found that would fit in the front doors are a set of Kenwood Neo-Magnet speakers, I think they sucked. The problem is the door frame comes into the speaker area and there is practically no room for a magnet. Pull the speaker off and take a look. I feel you pain because I have a Mcintosh and ADS stereo system that is just sitting at the house because it will not go in the truck.
