Overheating 1990 Range Rover

Posted by Quinn Watkins on October 06, 2000 at 16:07:33:

Hello, my name is Quinn Watkins and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah.
My wife and I just bought a Land Rover Range Rover County 1990 a few
days ago. We decided to go up the canyon which is just minutes from our
house and after a while of traveling up the canyon, grades varied from
3%-8% or 9%, about six miles up, the coolant light flashed so I looked
at the Temp gauge and it was just under halfway up (i.e. no where near
the danger zone, I think the gauge may be broken or something). So I kept going and about 1/2 mile later the engine
started to cough and so I pulled over and it idled for ten seconds or so
and then died. I immediately looked under the hood but could not find
any signs of coolant leaking or anything so we just let it cool off for
a few minutes and then traveled down. All I could surmise from this
incident is that possibly:

1. My gauge is not working right, whether it is the gauge or the
sensor, my suspiscion is that the temp sensor is bad.

2. My radiator is heavily calcified or clogged inside and is not able
to disipate the heat as it should (note: when I checked under the hood
the upper radiator hose felt hot so I suppose that the thermostat is
opening but I'm unsure how the RR is set up so I can't say for sure)

I should also note that I noticed that morning (the first time I had ever
checked) the heater was not working and wonder if that may be related
somehow to the problem but probably not. If any of you have seen or had
experience with this problem and know of any solutions I would greatly
appreciate it. Thanks
