I never had a 2.25 petrol engine but I had the diesel version of that engine. If these two engines have the same timing system, than your engine must have a timing chain. Touching with the timing chian there should be a metal bracket with a non frictional material stuck on to it. This material lies between the metal bracket and the chain, and it's aim is to avoid that the chain wears while in contact with this bracket. (I think the aim of the bracket is to keep the chain straight). Now the rattling starts when this non frictional material starts to wear out, and therfore there is more space between the chain and the bracket causing it to rattle. The soloution is to replace this bracket. It's cheap to buy and the Saturday mechanic shouldn't have too many problems to replace it. There is no need to tamper with the timing of the engine to do the job. I hope this is solves your problem - Etienne
