G'day

I've had both and drive a 300tdi Discovery at work.

For me, my next will be a late Classic Range Rover (on gas).

But both the Disco and Defender can be very good.

Defender -

Advantages. Space, size, simplicity of the body, chassis strength, off road ability (if you get better tyres), economy for size. The 300tdi with the R380 is very smooth for a tractor! The 200tdi / LT77 is still quite ok. Lower gearing for easier starts.

Disadvantages. Ergonomics (though after a Series II you will be in heaven), cramped driving position, not even slightly dust proof or water proof (undersealing does wonders), air con is minimal, somewhat noisy.

Discovery -

Advantages - Civilized interior, adequate space, clever storage options, aircon works, compact dimensions though not small, taller gearing aids economy

Disadvantages - smaller, more complicated body, lots of plastic, taller gearing makes first gear a bit dead especially with the R380 (post late 1994). Low range often needed to get moving.

Hope this helps a little.

Michael

All the Discoverys I have driven have been quite reliable. One had a major oil leak but this was easily fixed

Disadvantages
