I have also been looking at the 97/98 Discovery and wondered about the
1999 model. Found the info below on the Rover Group web site. I think
I've seen itcalled a Series II. Looks like more technology and a higher
price. As stated "moving significantly up market". Looks like my choice
is a 97/98. I'm not impressed with more technology. HDC is used on the
Freelander. It does not have a low range. I need low range (live in
Colorado and will use it off-road where 4lo is needed) so would not
consider a vehicle without it. That said - I can't think of why 4lo
and HDC can't coexist. A question for someone else.

NEW LAND ROVER DISCOVERY

...
Peter Kinnaird also confirmed that the Discovery name is so popular that its
replacement, due to go on sale in November, will have the same name. "The
new range will be called Discovery but it will be moving significantly up market.

"Land Rover has always managed to ensure that all its vehicles are the best off
road performers in their class. New Discovery will be more expensive, but with
its high content of new technology, it will also be the benchmark for on road
ride and handling that all its four wheel drive competitors will have to beat,"
added Mr Kinnaird.

At the beginning of 1998, at the Detroit Motor Show, Rover Group chairman
and chief executive Walter Hasselkus announced that new Discovery will
include class-leading four wheel drive technology such as four wheel drive
traction control, Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Active Ride Control (ARC).
