Timing rattle

The engine on my '82 109 station wagon, a 2.25 petrol with about
20,000 miles, has an intermittent rattle eminating from the front
of the engine somewhere.
I've checked everything visible for tightness and checked & adjusted
the tappets in case one of them was loose. I now think the noise is
coming from the timing cover. What's it likely to be. Is it a problem?
What's involved in fixing it? Cheers Rod.
