If not you should change the oil straight away, (but if by
any chance your Feb 97' should read Feb 98' soon you should start
thinking about replacing the oil even if you did not exceed the
5000 miles mark.

Does the engine leak oil from anywhere ?

If not, but the oil does not decrease drastically that might be within
acceptable limits. Check if white smoke comes out of the top cover
when the engine is warm, if it does very badly that might indicate
some wear on the cylinders or piston rings, but small amounts are normal
with TD and TDi engines. - Etienne
