I asked my LR Centre's mechanic about synthetics. (We have used them in several of our cars for years, and with great success). What I was told was that it depends upon your service record adherance. If you choose to change oils every 3,000 mi, as I do, the expense of synthetics is not warranted, as they have a longer service life - which is not uncommonly in the area of 12,000 miles! If you are keeping to a new vehicle warranty, of +/- 7,000 miles per change, perhaps they become a bit more favorable. On the realm of a performance car however...I still use Mobil One on my husband's '98 Firebird Formula, as he drives a bit harder than I and is less likely to bring her in for a pit stop within 3,000 miles! Our old Porsche 924 still lives with on her new owner at over 170K and with all original engine components and little in the way of leaks, and she had a steady diet of synthetics from the start.
