| ideas on how to waterproof Disco's GEM electronics unit? Posted by Bill on August 22, 2000 at 18:37:47: A while back, I got water in that little black box with the wimpy plastic shield...I had a 5,000 pound immovable lump of steel and aluminum until I sacrificed $140 to the dealer. Last week I damn near did it again while "gently" hosing mud off engine. I wrapped electical connections and the GEM in foil, and left the Disco running while cleaning. It started to sputter a bit, but eventually recovered after revving and letting it run for about 2 hours - but now the check engine light is back to haunt me. I'll be taking it in for an extensive tune-up and inspection soon, but I'm concerned about the very surprising engine electronics vulnerability in this supposedly ultra-rugged 4X4. The dealer said that getting the GEM unit wet shouldn't be a factor, as it sits higher than the air intake. I guess that in their infinite wisdom, they never heard of water splashing into the engine bay while travelling or cleaning the engine. Does a snorkel kit also address the GEM unit and other water sensitive areas? I know that I could submerge my jeep engine (excluding air intake) and power-wash the engine all I wanted...what's up with my Rover? Also, has anyone ever tried to seal off the engine bay from the elements (obviously not an air-tight seal, just to improve engine's isolation from mud/water splashing up from wheels)? Thanks,
