Gearbox "Clonk" and revs slow to drop back.

I recently bought an '86 Range Rover (changeover model with 5 cog box & the newer EFi type body/chassis, but the Stromberg carb'ed engine). The cam was knacked so I put in a 3.9 cam & followers. What I'm getting is a problem with the revs being very slow to drop back to tickover when the engine is warm - the return spring is quite strong and working well so I've ruled that out.
Also, I'm confused about the transmission backlash . I've always believed that there was not much cost difference between a re-con 'box anf replacing the main shaft. However I've now been told that most of the wear is in the transfer box diff (??) and it is relatively easy & cheap to fix (£100 or so)
Any helpful comments ??

Keith
