Different beast, but friend of mine with older vintage classic RR had the centre diff lock - lock on without the dashboard light illuminating. Was the vacuum type but as he stripped the centre diff it's well worthwhile checking. Same noise syptoms when only turning. Possibly you can check by suspending one axle and turning that axle propshaft, if diff locked no rotation? am I right?
