I bought a 91 used range rover in december and it has been running fine ever since. The only problem I've had is a blown fuse and having to change the foglight bulb. Both no problem, even for people who aren't mental giants. Maintanence isn't too bad. As an off-road vehicle, a range rover is subject to forces which road cars couldn't handle but this also means you have to be more adamant about maintenance. My routine is a weekly washing (good for any type of car) but I am extremely anal about hosing off mud, grass, sand, etc. around the wheel wells as well as even climbing underneath to hose off the undercarriage and chasis. OIl changes should be done every 3000 miles or less, depending on usage, and its reccommended to switch to synthetic oil. Other than that, taking the rover into the dealer for its scheduled service is about all you have to do. Of course, being an imported luxury auto, service isn't cheap. 30,000 and 60,000 checks will run a healthy tab, but the other ones are about $300. The best vehicles require the best service, and both aren't cheap. But having the best makes it worth it. One thing though. Invest in wd-40. The tailgate area is very prone to rust so I always spray some on the metal on the glass top, and along the sides of the of the bottom. Do that weekly. Basically, the key to a happy range rover is preventative maintanence. Set up a weekly wash/inspection routine and you and your rover will be happy. Everthing is well laid out, and believe it or not is really not that complicated after a couple of good looks. Feel free to e-mail me at: david_98wacht@usmma.edu with more quesitons if you have them. Also, Roversnorth has a great BBS which adresses some of these and other issues. Check it out.
