I have a 1978 LWB Slll 2.5 Diesel fitted with an overdrive. I know exactly what your going through. The overdrive is great in 4th gear as on M/way or even 40 limits. In 3rd however it of lesser value. If the hill isn't too steep it's OK although there isn't much power. You still chug up there at 30 but without the engine screaming. On steeper, longer hills it just won't have it and you end up knocking it back down to 3rd anyway, although some brief respite from the noise is always helpful. I would be interested to know if you manage to fit a turbo and what difference it makes. Having said that an overdrive is a good investment due to the extra speed and MPG on long runs, just don't expect too much in 3rd.. Hope this is of use to you, good luck whatever you decide.
