Have you got the external gps antenna already? If you get a really good one like the lowe you can do what tom suggests a few posts up, just place it inside a window and you will still see dramatic improvement over the factory antenna. I am a bit biasse ( I distribute LOWE antennas as well as conectors for garmin power/data cables) But the LOWE, or similar amplified unit will give you great performance. On of my customers recently told me he flew his airplane sveral hundred miles with the antenna on a parcel shelf, facing inward by mistake. Performance was still much better than with the garmin antenna above teh dash that he didn't notice tioll after landing.
With the lowe's magnet mount you have plenty of space on the roof of the disco. I would simply run the wire outside through a seldom used door.
on a rangie or series you have to get more creative. The hood(bonnet) of my rangie seems like a decent place.
