Any MOT test station, will tell you if they are 'functioning'! But as for the extra heat your getting... Worst than could happen is that the internals of CAT will melt and block exhaust!!
Usually on them, they make a lovely rattle... then its time!
Think IIRC the V8 service schedule on RR and Disco, actually stipulates CAT replacemnt at 96,000 miles..?!
