Salisbury Axle Pinion leak

Posted by Gareth Roberts on July 04, 2000 at 15:43:35:

Is it possible to adjust the pinion bearing whilst changing the pinion oil seal in a Salisbury rear axle?. The pinion seal is leaking quite badly, and there is slight play in the input shaft. Is this play normal?. In the manual it looks like taper roller bearings are fitted to the pinion shaft. It mentions that you should carefully mark all components, including the flange nut, so that they can be re-assembled to the exact same position. Can I slightly overtighten the nut to take up the play, or is this not advisable. The vehicle only does low mileage, and the axle is quiet. Any advice would be most welcome.
