New Disco - is it worth it?

Posted by Mike and Linny on April 28, 1998 at 04:01:04:

We own a '95 Disco Tdi 300 manual (from new) and have experienced a wide range of serious and minor faults. These include problems requiring a new motor!, new gear box, new rear diff, new dash, new window seals, door adjustments, electrical rewiring and more. These faults were all repaired under warranty at no cost to ourselves, but have severely shaken our confidence in the vehicle, particularly for use in remote off-road locations in northern Australia. Our dealer has recently negotiated a reasonably fair deal (but by no means cheap) to upgrade us to a current (1998) Tdi Disco. We'd welcome peoples' opinions on whether this would be throwing good money after bad or whether the newer models are more reliable.
Also, we're contemplating paying a fraction more and upgrading to a Tdi with automatic transmission. Has anyone had experience with automatic Tdi's off road (particularly in soft sand or rocky conditions)? Are they worth considering for moderate to severe off-road use? Thankyou in advance for your responses.
