The short answer to this question is that some 1994 model Disco's have problems, some don't.
My parents own a '94 model 3 door TDi. Whilst the overall milage is low and it has been serviced by a main dealer, it has suffered no serious problems at all. In fact, it has almost been a paragon of reliability. However, a friend works for a large dealership in the Midlands here in the UK. He has commented several times that whilst most Disco's are fine, some are far from it. Such stories included a batch of seven vehicles delivered new in August 1997, which suffered a problem in construction at Solihull. The result was that within 100 miles, six had to be recovered by the dealer - and required new engines!
It appears that build quality can be patchy. If problems door occur, they mainly appear to be concerned with gearboxes and electrical components.
I have heard (in jest) that it may boil down to which day of the week a vehicle has been built on, with Monday and Friday vehicles being prone to problems!!
