Jeep owner has questions about Discoveries. I might convert!

Here are my questions about buying a 96 Discovery.
Are the repairs much more expensive?
Does the V8 gass guzzle?
Can I buy a brush guard for less than $750. (That what the dealer said.)
Also please mention if there is a way to stop the erosion of the weather stripping around the windows that I have noticed. You see, Im a Jeep person who is not used to this weather stripping and Leather interior stuff. Thank you
