I have a 96' Discovery that had this same problem. I replaced the original antenna with a factory power antenna from one of the many mail order parts suppliers. It was easy and improved the reception dramatically. Its better than any of my other cars! I recommend changing your antenna long before you consider replacing the head!!!

The only tricky parts of the power antenna installation, is pulling out the head unit (must loosen two allen screws on each side of unit)and finding the 12 volts switched when the head is turned on.

When you remove the inner plasic fender (to access the antenna), I would suggest replacing the factory aluminium expanding rivets with clip-on nuts and s/s screws.

Good Luck...
