G'day
I'm writing from Australia so what I have to say may not be mean anything where you are. The Discovery is a re-skinned "Range Rover Classic". They have been round since 1970 and so are quite well sorted out.
In 1994, a new manual gearbox was introduced (but you probably have autos anyway) and some of these had a problem with lubrication. Most were fixed under warranty. They become "clunky" after about 20,000km.
The V8 has been round since forever (about 1961 in a Buick) and is pretty bullet proof. If things do go wrong it is generally with the add ons such as sun roofs, electric seats, stereos etc etc. All the things that a 4x4 probably shouldn't have.
The basic vehicle is pretty sound. My 1993 tdi has done about 95000km and apart from a few rattles is going as well as ever.

Michael
