Sounds like the transfer box is worn out and when this happens the high / low ratio knob keeps jumping out of gear. some people will jam it into gear with a peice of wood or something but I wouldn't recommend it as it is a disaster waiting to happen
You could have it re conditioned but you will probably be able to get a good second hand one cheaper!!
Get hold of a replacment, get it fitted (Or fit it yourself) and enjoy the motor!!
