Jan 1990 Discovery TDi Engine Power Problem

Posted by Julian Palfrey on February 12, 1998 at 15:03:00:

History...
- 120,000 miles on clock.
- Head Gasket on number 4 blew.
- Engine dieseled through turbo - destroying turbo.

Engine repaired - new Land Rover Turbo
- new head Gasket
- Injectors cleaned & checked
- fuel pump checked
- Injector pump checked and re calibrated
- pump timing checked
- new cam belt
- Compression all inside land rover tolerance
- fuel lines blown through
- fuel tank cleaned
- all filters cleaned/replaced
- turbo boosting at correct pressure
- wastegate opening at correct pressure

All of the mixtures read correctly on the relevant diesel tsting equipment.

After all this the engine developes power slowly tailing off quickly such
that any hill the car slows to around 40 mph in third gear.

Before the engine blew Most hills could be taken in %th gear without problem.

This problem has been looked at by three qualified and respected land rover men in the
UK - to no avail - the land rover dealer has no idea

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as things are starting to
get a little bit expensive.

- The suspicion is that the turbo wastegate is opening too early - or that
the turbo is to 'Slow' to boost and wont spin up any faster.
