Following on from what Dan said, the Chapter 13 supplement in the Haynes workshop manual states that from 1980 onwards 'the 109 rear axle is similar to the 88 except for the diff being of Salisbury design'.
Incidentally I have an ex-military lightweight ser 3 with the heavy duty crossmember and it does have the power take off hole in it.
