Allan, Welcome to the club. In response to your Questions: Your 109 should have a Salsbury rear end in it. I'm not sure at what point these were put into the Land Rover, but I think that it is one of the differences between the SIII and the earlier SIIA. You can identify it by the fact that it will have a cover plate that bolts onto the rear of the diff. housing in the same manner that a Chevy would, as opposed to the Rover rear end that comes apart from the front of the diff. housing. These rear ends weren't as prone to the breaking of the half shafts(axle) as were rover rear ends. You will also have a larger diam. drum for your rear brakes. As far as identifying half shafts for it, the Rover half shafts have 10 splines where they fit into the differential and the salsbury have (I believe)24 splines. So yes you do ave a heavy duty rear end when compared to all the other Land Rovers including SIII 88's. A military cross member is identified by it being the same hieght all the way across (in effect: a rectangle) it where as the standard civilian model is flat across the top of it (with the exceptions of the tabs that are fastened to the body) but are narrower at each end and then going down on an angle towards the center of the vehicle, but maxing out about one third of the total width; in efect dividing the crossmember into thirds. The civilian model also has a hole for the rear PTO (power take-off) shaft to come through and I don't think that the military one had that. Hope that this helps, and doesn't raise more questions than it answered. Take care, Dan. '61 SII 88 HT.
