Is the Defender really the car for me?

Posted by Poul Bjerre on January 05, 1998 at 06:32:55:

I am thinking about buying a Land Rover Defender 90 TDi and I do not have any prior experience with 4x4. I have read the discussions in this forum concerning the pros and cons of the Land Rover in relation to other compatible makes. This discussion seems to focus on the off-road capabilities of the Land Rover and I am convinced that the Land Rover is unique in this department.

I have been keen on getting a Land Rover for as long as I can remember and now the dream is within reach and I am getting second thoughts. What I need is a vehicle that will perform both on and off the tarmac. I do some driving related to my job and 500 to 700 kilometres of highway driving in one day are not uncommon. Also the Land Rover will be my only vehicle and I will be depending on it every day of the week.

From some of the contributions to the discussions it would appear (to me at least), that the Land Rover is a poor car with low quality and high maintenance costs. Is this really the case? What can I expect when I buy a brand new Defender? Should I only buy a Land Rover if I am willing to spend all my free time under the bonnet?

I have a passion for old motor cycles, so I can appreciate a good piece of machinery build with a purpose and meant to last a lifetime. I guess this is the reason why I was attracted to Land Rovers in the first place. I thought that Land Rovers were in this category - Was I wrong? I live in Denmark so I imagine, that the weather here is pretty much the same as in the UK.

There must be thousands of people out there who drives and enjoys Land Rovers every day. I would appreciate your input very much.

Thank you

Poul Bjerre
