This is not completely true but does indicate that you should not allow a diesel to loaf. A diesel left idling for a long time or operating at only a small fraction of its power output will eventually glaze its bores and start to consume lots of oil. Operating it at high revs on the highway is also not all that good for most of the more old fashioned diesels such as the LR 2.25 but the later tdi engines seem to tolerate this better mainly because they are geared lower I suspect. I try to acelerate firmly but not flat out, drive at constant engine speeds below 3000rpm and my engine is going strong at 160,000km (100,000 miles). When I first got it at 41,000km , it had been driven mainly round town and was slightly smokey. Now that it does longer trips and at speeds of approx 100kph (60mph) it is less smokey and going well I recently towed a car trailer with Boris my "new" 1962 88 on it for about 50 miles and this did not seem to do any harm and may have actually done some good but I cant quantify it. In short - drive it sensibly but use its power, change its oil, filter, fuel filter regularly, don't over rev it for long periods and have its injectors checked about every 100,000 miles and it will serve you well. And don't leave it idling for long periods. Michael
