Hi,

I just bought my first Land Rover (1972 SIII 88") in June, and have been in a love affair ever since. Which is not to say that I haven't gotten frustrated some times when I am clueless about fixing it, but things always work out.

Owning a Series Land Rover is really fun and rewarding. I didn't even know how to change oil before I got my Rover, and since I bought it, I have replaced the rear half shafts, pulled the differential, attatched an overdrive, adjusted the valves and timing, replaced all the hub seals and distance pieces, put on a new cylinder head (with the help of fellow friends/Rover owners), put on a new drag ling tube and tie rod ends, and other tasks. I don't mean to scare you by this list. My truck required a little work to make it a FUN daily driver. Meaning, it could drive before, but it wasn't enjoyable. (Imagine driving a vehicle in blistering August heat, that makes as much noise as a WWII bomber!)

Before I bought my Rover, I didn't even know what a drag link tube was! You will find that fellow owners are very willing to give you help and advice when you are making repairs. When I replaced the cylinder head on mine, I drove it to a crabfeast held by local Washington, DC area Rover owners to ask for some help. No sooner had I pulled up in the driveway and cut the engine off, but one guy opened and removed the bonnet and started at work, another was hanging over the wing with a socket wrench, and a third was sitting on the roof with his feet dangling over the windscrenn, directing the entire affair!

The Rovers North bulletin board for Series trucks is a great resource for new owners. (www.roversnorth.com) I have had many technical questions answered, usually in a day or less! Find out about local area Land Rover clubs, and join ASAP. They are good for technical problems, as I described above. Also, they are a great way to do some off-raoding, and meet other owners.

Good luck with your new purchase! You have entered into a fraternity of men and women owning the best 4 by 4 by far!

Rover on,

Peter Wood
