First off, you can try driving the car first... slowly, maybe even use Low-Range... if it clunk/bangs (not suspension flexing about, but drive train noise) you can bet splines are going/gone.
A D90 isn't bad to get cover off... but we've found LRUK uses far too much Loctite, thus bolts may have to be heated up to release Loctite.
LRNA gets $306. for a new gear, apporx 1-hour to replace. BUT... if splines on gearbox mainshaft are toast you'll be in for a gearbox, which LRNA has on B/O as of info supplied today! Cost of unit is just shy of $3000.00 plus labor to R&R and oil, etc.
