That depends.

Basically ALL cars with an LT230 transfer case built before mid 1994 have the problem. In mid 1994 they replaced the input gear with a cross drilled one to let oil into the splines. The newer box start with suffix "F". Look at your boxe's serial number.

The type of gearbox does not really matter that much. The auto boxes are better as the don't put as much jarring forces on the splines. With a manual it depends a lot on how smoothly the individual drives. Also, I've heard that driving on extremely steep slopes lets oil into the splines. So it is a good idea to do some difficult trails every now and then. Just in case you need a good excuse.

The proper fix is to replace the input gear with a cross drilled one and the output shaft of the gearbox. I believe that on autos this is screwed on separate from the gearbox. On manuals, it is the mainshaft and requires a full disassembly.

Don't worry unless the backlash is excessive. I have had my manual '91 Disco for two years and 50000 kms and the backlash has not increased.
