Land Rover Newbie

I was out cutting down a Christmas tree this weekend and saw a little truck like vehicle called a "Land Rover".
Now, I know Land Rover as the expensive import SUV, but this little truck intreagued me.
I know it was up there in age... can anyone help me out, what was this little truck like thing?
