Ive found out where the noise is coming from. It's a loose disc thing
behind the crankshaft pulley (an oil thrower perhaps) - it's not even shown in the workshop manual I've got. I threw some grease on it and the noise stopped - but the grease wore off pretty quick and the noise is back.
Oh happy days! Can I tighten this thing without taking the pulley off?
It's not the sort of noise I want people to hear when I pull up at the lights. It's not Landrover like!
