1962 Land Rover Series IIA

Posted by Matt Farr on December 14, 1997 at 04:30:35:

I am considering purchasing what I'm told is a '62 Series IIA soft top. Since I'm in Singapore where car prices have gone to the moon, the asking price is about US21K which I know sounds like a lot but that's the way it is here. Before I put that kind of money down for a vehicle that's older than I am, I want to go my research. I'm wondering about the year. Can I tell from the VIN what year is it? I'm confused because the guys swears it's a '62, but the headlights are on the wings which I thought didn't happen until '67 or so. Additionally, the grille is plastic, but shaped more like a fat "plus" sign than the inverted "T" I thought early IIA's had. And lastly, the steering pins appear to be *above* the axel- not below.
Can anyone suggest a reliable way of dating this vehicle? It's in excellent shape (due to the climate here) and I would truly love to own it, but I really need to be sure of what I'm getting.
Thanks for helping out.
