My SIII recently had a the same sort of problem. I don't know how the switch in a SII works but I'll explain what happened to mine, it may help. One night I noticed the Lucas switch for my headlights was getting extremely hot and a burning plastic smell filled the cab. The headlights keeped cutting out but worked again after some roadside percussive maintenance was carried out on the switch. Once home I stripped the switch to find the internals damaged. Some plastic welding and glueing soon had the broken parts back together and they have worked faultlessly ever since, and saved me the expense of a new switch.
