Make sure your alternator has a W terminal. All 300 TDi's should have this. Remove the alternator heatshield and the W terminal should be at the bottom(back)of the alternator covered by a rubber bush - pull this off. My alternator was the Marelli type. Europa Specialist Parts 01283 815609 can supply a tacho made by VDO, part number 330015009K, price £76.64 + VAT. They should also be able to supply the other gauges you're after. This tacho is 52mm in diameter and will fit into the blank hole next to the fuel/water gauges without any cutting of the instrument panel. Tap into the feeds for the night illumination lamps for the fuel gauge to provide illunination for the tacho. The tacho needs a 12V feed and an earth. Get the earth by connectiong to the back of the fuel gauge. Get the 12v supply by tapping into the WHITE wires which go to the multiway plug which connects to the printed circuit board for the instrument panel warning lights. Finally connect a wire from the W terminal on the alternator back to the tacho. I used switch setting off, off, on (see tacho instructions) the tacho also needed a slight adjustment on the preset. A 300TDi should idle at 720rpm +/- 20 rpm when hot. An alternative method, although more tricky is to use another (petrol)car with a tacho, fitted with a strobe timing light. Paint a white mark an the crankshaft pulley of the TDi, and shine the strobe fitted to the other car at the mark. When the two engine speeds are the same, the mark will be stationary. Adjust your tacho to read the same as the other vehicle. That's it. There is also a tacho thet Land Rover fit to the South African TD5's. It's about £65, I've got the part number somewhere but when I checked at my local Dealer, they said it would be a special factory order. Also I'm not sure of the relative diameters of the crankshaft and alternator pulleys on the TD5 so this may affect calibration, which could be a problem especially if the LR tacho was not adjustable.
