
Re: Re: swivel pin rebuild "attention peter howard" Posted by todd weiner on December 11, 1997 at 16:21:37: In Reply to: Re: swivel pin rebuild posted by Peter Howard on December 05, 1997 at 21:04:32: thank you for your response to my plea for help. it is friday the 11th of december on guam and my swivel pin rebuild is complete. i took the whole sph off of the axel case and completely degrease it as you suggested. i followed the haynes repair manual to the letter and didn't expierience any problems. i ended up reusing the original shims and adding a few more on each side to obtain the desired tension. i am not completely satisfied with the job though. while the front end is jacked up in the air i grab the wheel at the six o'clock position and at the twelve o'clock position and shake the wheel. unfortunately i note some play in the swivel pin housing in the area of the lower bearing that the lower pin rides in. i don't think that is a good thing. i don't know why there is play there. it is on both sides. once again I followed the repair manual to the letter and the rebuild kit i ordered came with two new top pins and two new railko bushes. the only conclusion I can come up with is that the lower pins are worn or the lower bearings and or race are worn. peter, once again I am asking for words of wisdom or any brainstroming ideas you may have. i took the truck for a test run and she ran fine. no wheel wobble or vibration. everything mateed up and turns free and wonderfull. when i vsually look at the swivel pin housing whilst my friend moves the wheel i only notice the play from the lower pin/bearing.
