'97 300 Tdi, to smoke or not ?? Posted by John H on August 31, 1999 at 06:56:39: Magazines give advise on avoiding 'smoky deisels'. I've had mine from new and it smokes ( at times ) as far as I can make out. Smokes ( black ) when accelerating or under load on a hill, at starting and when I reverse for some reason. I know they smoke at times, but is this exccessive and what is advised against ? How much smoke should I expect ? I've done 17000 miles so far and still under warranty, failed smoke test under the MoT at a bus garage but passed at a dealer test ( he stated that the engine must be red hot after a good run to get a reading ) I believe the pass is at about 3; the garage reading averaged about 5 but the dealer ticket showed 2.3. Perhaps I am just suspicious ? John H
