Accelerator Problem

Posted by MXOStock on August 21, 1999 at 15:25:38:

Just had an interesting problem thought I might share--accelerator pedal stuck in the wide open position--luckily we were entering an interstate highway so we needed to accelerate. But, it would not slow down so I put the selector in neutral and coasted to the side, then pulled the pedal to idle. No other problems on that trip--at first I thought it was the rubber matt hitting the pedal. Well, I got home opened the hood and started to troubleshoot. Accelerator linkage at engine side worked good--free moving, clean, no binding. But I now could push the accelerator pedal inside and it would bind and stay down--checked the tech data area about cable and tension return spring--good picture and good place to start. So, I removed the lower dash plastic--return spring fine-- so I sprayed silicone on the pivot bolt--no change. I loosened the bolt and then everything worked fine. So I spray lubed the pivot area real good then retightened the bolt and it's all working fine. Definitely a very scary incident that could have been worse if we were in heavy traffic. I don't know why it decided to bind up at that time--anybody have any ideas? MXOStock
