Low Coolant Level Warning Light

Posted by BML on July 29, 1999 at 14:43:45:

My 1989 Range Rover has an intermittent Low Coolant Level Warning Light. When I start my car in a cold outdoor environment the warning light blinks on the instrument panel. It will blink for a few seconds up to a couple of minutes depending upon how cold it is outside--the colder it is, the longer it blinks. The problem usually starts in the winter when the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and doesn't happen at all in the summer. When the warning light is blinking there are a few accessories that won't work--the heater fan, the blinkers, the reverse lights, etc. After several seconds the light stops blinking and function is restored to all accessories and everything works fine--until the car is parked for a few hours in the cold and allowed to cool down, then the problem manifests itself again upon start-up. I checked the Coolant Level Sending Unit and that's functioning fine. I also checked the condition of all the grounding points and found no problems there either. I'm hoping someone has crossed this bridge themselves and can shed some light on this subject. Any thoughts? Thanks.
