The symptoms that you have described certainly indicate that the timing is out - But not normally out, DRASTICALLY OUT!
Both engines described are very old, so my guess is that both of them had their timing chains replaced at some time in their life (even L.R. timing chains can fail you know), and that they were not replaced in exactly the right place (i.e. one/two teeth retard/advance).
If this had happened, no amount of turning the distributor is going to fix your problem.
Unfortunately it is bloody difficult to get to the damn chain, but if all else doesn't work then it might be worth looking into.
