G'day

The Australian army hated the 6 and loved the 4. Now you know why.

Try the following -

1. Retard the timing about 3 degrees then keep retarding a little at a time until it stops pinging. OR

2. Run higher octane fuel.

3. Check that the distributor is working correctly. Lucas distributors wear badly with age.

4. Check that your radiator is OK

The army specifies a top speed of 80kph for these vehicles.

You can get a high speed transfer case which would help stop the engine screaming. Available form Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne for about A$875.

These engines work well if they are in good condition but are terrible if worn or out of tune. They must be just right. They are never powerful.

Perhaps you should chase a 200tdi or a 300tdi and a high speed transfer case and high ratio diffs?

Michael
