Vulnerable Exhaust on Series III Lightweight

I have just ripped the tail pipe off my Series III Lightweight, driving through a tree I should have moved!
The exhaust on my model pokes out behind the right rear tyre and stands a few inches proud of the vehicle.
The obvious answer is to take a hack saw to the thing and cut it back into the wheel-arch somewhere. Has anyone tried this, will it fill my soft-top with fumes? Any other ideas? Thanks
