Spare Wheel on Bonnet/Hood: Defender TD5

Posted by Christopher Miller (UK) on May 30, 1999 at 01:35:04:

I am interested in founding out if it is possible to mount the spare wheel on the bonnet/hood of a 1999 Defender, fitted with a TD5 engine.

I hear conflicting stories:
The brochures say it is an option, and one dealer says it can be done.

Two other dealers I have spoken to say it cannot be done:
-One says because the structure under the bonnet is not adequate (and admittedly it does look flimsy).
-The other says it cannot be done because it the added supporting structure would be too close to the [larger] TD5 engine.

What is the official stance? If Land Rover's brochures say it can be fitted as an option, then surely it is possible.

Anybody else to comment?
