A large "sandwich plate" is bolted to the bottom of the bolck to stiffen it. The 300tdi is a completely new block designed to be quieter and less harsh than the 300tdi. It also goes a little better though not all that much. I have had both and I currently drive a 200tdi at home and 300tdi at work. They are both great though the 300 is slightly quieter and its associated R380 gearbox and transfer case are quieter too though the taller gearing makes starting off in the 300tdi powered vehicle more difficult. There have been some horror stories about broken cam belts but I have had no problems and when I replaced my belt at 100,000km, it was still quite OK with no wear. Michael
