My father has been running a series III 109" for years with no check strap and hasn't managed to do any damage to the drivetrain yet. This is despite boyh mine and his best efforts during trials to smash diff casings against floorpans !!!
The reason that the 109" has no check straps is that they became worn and eventually got snapped by an ill placed rock.
Incedentally, we also run a IIA as a trialler without check straps and no problems with fouling but increased axle travel is one hell of an advantage at times.
