Catalytic Converters on Series Rovers ?

Hi, I'd like to know whether there is an affordable way to improve emissions on older Landies.
I'm about to fit a new exhaust system, anyway. Even an un-regulated CC would improve emissions by 50%, or so.
Could one take one out of a Lada Niva or other newish (wrecked) vehicle and is the proceedure viable/straight forward?
P.S.: Naturally, I've got an unleaded head on my 4 cylinder '69 IIa SWB. Cheers, CW
