Generally considered unwise to remove the straps from your rear axle. They are there to limit the downwards movement of the axle. Too much downward movement, particularly when one wheel is articulated right up and one right down leads to a.unfavourable angles on the propshaft universals b."topping out" of your expensive shockies c.in extreme cases, the coming apart of your propshaft sliding joint d.excessive strain on your axle leaves. No doubt more experienced roverphiles can add to this catalogue of perils but its advisable to have the straps present and in good order. What to make them of is a perenniel question. Seat belt webbings too light. Leather would want to be darn good thick leather. 2inch canvas machine belting is great if you can get it. OEM spares require a mortgage on the wife and kids to purchase. Anyone else got any suggestions? Cheers, Peter
